Was the Poseidon movie based on a true story?

I assume you are asking about the movie the Poseidon adventure or the remake about a ship that capsizes. - it is not based a true story...but there are rare freak waves that can do that in the middle of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans - it is pretty rare but some container/ freight ships have been lost presumably by these waves - but we'll never know for sure
