What would the Percy Jackson series be like if Poseidon had never claimed Percy?

Just think of the possibilities. The only reason Poseidon claimed Percy was because Percy could get him out of a tight spot. But what if Poseidon managed to prove his innocence without Percy's help, so he never had to claim Percy? How do you think the series would have changed?
